My New Year’s Resolutions and the Yogi Assignment

My New Year’s Resolutions this year have been much more abstract than they have been in the past. They used to be: get fit, eat healthy, and all other common (but still) great resolutions. Those are definitely part of my goals but I am continually working towards eating better and getting more fit that it seems pointless to make them my resolutions. This year I wanted my goals to be oriented around my mental health. I believe physical health can promote better mental health; that is how I fell in love with yoga, it makes me feel happier. Lately I’ve been noticing a bit of a plateau with my mental health. I know there is more I can do, so this year my resolutions are to do things that make me happy and remove the things that don’t.

An example is: when I go out drinking a lot, the next morning I am depressed. It is one of the worst feelings in the world. And I am making myself feel this way. I plan to drink more modestly and drink what I really enjoy like good wine, craft beer, and thought out cocktails. I don’t want to drink for the sake of getting drunk.

I also know for a fact that what makes me feel incredible is doing yoga at least 3 times a week in some form. So I will do my best to do this or even more. This is what inspired me to start of 2018 by doing Kino MacGregor’s 30 day Yogi Assignment. The Yogi Assignment isn’t all posture yoga. It is about bringing yogic principles into your daily life. Just after the first few days I have been feeling more mindful and present in what I do. The first day was about Stillness and the homework is to meditate for 5 minutes everyday of this challenge. I can’t believe how easy it has been to incorporate just 5 minutes of meditation into my day. I look forward to my other lessons and will check in halfway through and at the end of this challenge.
